I found out on Saturday that I got into the Honors College program at the U of U! YAY! I hear that this makes the experience a lot more personal, even though it's a really big school. I'm really excited!
Today I found out that I got a scholarship to the U of U! It covers up to 18 credits per semester, and is renewable until I get my Bachelor's. YAY! I'm even more excited!
I've also found more and more scholarships online -- this time, ones I want to apply for and think I stand a chance for.
Today in Girl Scouts we talked about cookies (delicioso) and careers. We're planning on doing some career exploration. Hopefully, we'll be meeting a pediatrician next month, but I'm really excited for Ben (Something... I forget). Doreen says he's a producer at NPR, writes magazine articles, and used to work at a newspaper; he's a journalist! Now that my future career is shuffling closer and closer, I'm really excited to discover my opportunities. Hopefully I will learn some things to help guide success to my door.
We also talked about mentors. It made me realize how truly grateful I am to have some people in my life. Doreen herself has been a huge mentor for me my whole life. She's become a real friend, and a person I really trust. She gave me a big hug when she found out I made it into the U, and it meant a lot to me. She's supported me the whole way, and I remember talking to her about college before I talked to my parents or even my friends about it. I would be perfectly content to be something like her when I get older. Mr. Erickson has also become a mentor to me. Even though I've only known him for about a year, he's supported me in all of my endeavors. He's the sort of critical eye that is important in creative work; it lets me know that his praise is unsolicited and his criticisms are not vacuous. His class is my favorite. I hope I'll keep in touch with him for a long time -- he's truly an amazing, inspiring man.
Both of them have been helping me immensely with Sterling Scholar. The due date is coming soon, and I think I will be ready. I'm proud of the work I have put in so far. There's nothing like reading a letter of recommendation to burn your humble pie.
The Sterling Scholar dinner is on Monday. I'm nervous, but I'm not sure why. I don't have any real reason to be nervous -- it's just a bunch of overachievers gathered around the table, talking about themselves. ;) Monday is also Julia's birthday! (Happy birthday, Julia!!)
I have to write a speech for Academic Decathlon, and in the rush of all of my pride, I got my rough draft done rather easily. I want to talk about the power of poetry in language. I know, I know... I'm predictable. But they say "write what you know", and I'd rather write about something I'm passionate about.
Friday is the Teen Yule Ball! I had such a blast in December, so I am really, really excited. It will be nice to just get out and do something fun!
The Winter Guard Evaluation is this Saturday! I am, again, nervous, but I'm impressed with what the guard has done so far. Even though I still have to tell the band council that we're not finished, it's in an unusual way. We're doing better than usual. We actually look good, for just figuring out our show. I'm excited to start the season! I'm really, really, really hoping to take some trophies this year. I will beam. XX
Then Wednesday is the Poetry Out Loud school competition -- agh! It looks like there are a lot fewer students trying out than initially, maybe eight? I feel really confident in my memorization of "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost, but I'll be spending my free time doing homework, and my free-free time memorizing the other two poems!
And then finally, finally, we'll have the Academic Decathlon regionals (nervous nervous), and our first Winter Guard competition (nervous excited). January has been crazy (crazy crazy)!
Things have really been going my way this year. Which is AWESOME. And also makes me feel unstoppable, and slightly full of myself. But I suppose sometimes, we just have to say we deserve it. :)
Also, happy birthday, Mom. I love you.
Don't forget to be awesome!
